Digital (Social) Strategist - usually the lead on the account or team. This person has the ability to see the big picture, look beyond just “social” as a viable channel. This person has to be an excellent communicator and is usually talking with senior folks on the client side.

Digital Project Manager: This person plays sort of a hybrid role. They own the day to day role with the client so they are very tactical. They need to be strategic in nature and have the ability to make decisions fast, especially with crisis communications. They oversee timelines, content calendars and manage web projects with the developer (or technical) teams. They usually have a small team working for them (community manager, copywriters, interns, etc.)

Community Manager – this person is a good writer, up to speed on new communication tools. Usually this person can hold a junior and/or senior level role depending on the client/agency. Their main responsibility is to write social content for Facebook/Twitter and potentially corporate blogs and engage directly with the community.

Copywriter – Usually works for the community manager and may develop editorial (weekly, monthly and thematic – long term) calendars for Facebook, Twitter and blogs. This person is most likely a junior staffer and similar to the content programmer.

Influencer/Analyst Relations – this is basically the PR team, who work closely with. In most cases, they essentially own the relationship with 3rd party bloggers, analysts, journalists, etc. They do a lot of work with customer advocacy programs and these relationships/programs are managed by the digital team(s) at the agency. T

Finance – while not client facing, Finance team is REALLY up to speed with the social landscape. They play a crucial role in helping the account teams understand Statements of Work, Agency Profitability, Utilization, etc.

Analytics – our analytics team are responsible for managing analytics related projects i.e. conversational audits, monthly reporting for clients, etc. There are really two roles within the analytics team; one would be a strategist and would be responsible for partnering with the account leads (and potentially clients) in determining social KPIs and best practices for social analytics.

Developer – this is the smart guy that uses Wordpress, Ajax and whatever else is new to develop mashups, blogs, communities, web pages, etc.

Designer – typical in most agencies, obviously. The difference is that our design guys really get social, so every comp that gets presented to clients usually has social elements front and center, above the fold … etc. What’s cool about this is that we used social to define a new category in Ethernet networking, data centers, virtualization space just using social.
